Youngest Ever To Serve In School Governing Board

Phoenix, AZ – On a typical January night in one Phoenix neighborhood, something not so typical will take place. The youngest elected school governing board member will take his spot as member of Cartwright School District No. 83.

Pedro Lopez, 20, is the newest elected governing board member in District 83. He is also one of the youngest elected officials in the state. On January 9th, 2013 he will serve in his first ever school district board meeting. As a young leader in his community in the past several years, he has been able work with other talented youth in his community. In high school, he stood out as leader among his peers because of his involvement with several different extracurricular activities. The following summer after his graduation from Trevor G. Browne High School in West Phoenix, he was motivated by the immigrant community in his neighborhood and led a small rally of students on the lawn of the state capitol.

In the years ensuing he became a community organizer driven by social justice. Pedro worked across the state in efforts to register large amounts of unregistered latino voters in the state of Arizona. On several occasions he has worked on a national scale endorsing the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform.

Just this past year, Pedro Lopez decided to run for school board. Pedro has become an example of a new face for politics for Arizona. “Building community, empowering our youth, and ensuring that every student has equal access to education,” states Pedro's vision. “I have been involved with the community of Phoenix over the course of the last two years and have had the privilege to work with many other talented youth. As a student myself, seeking to major in Political Science at Glendale Community College, I’ve realized how important an education is, specially at a young age.” The Cartwright school board meeting will take place on January 9th, 2013 at 6:30pm in the Cartwright District office board room 3401 N. 67th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85033.
